As any manager would say, getting respect from employees is challenging and sometimes impossible. However, there are ways that can help such as maintaining a positive attitude. Negative managers seldom receive respect from their employees. Instead, they often get ridicule and obstinate behavior from their employees. One way to get respect is to be available to your employees. Take time to talk with your employees. Ask their opinions on important matters and make them feel that they can turn to your when they have issues that are bothering them.
In addition, offer to help someone, even if you are busy. Take time to walk through your work area. Step in and help them through a problem that is particularly difficult. Be a person who delegates instead of telling a person how to do it. Most employees are looking for ways to develop their skills. When you delegate, you are giving them a task to accomplish. Let them find out for themselves how to do the task. Most importantly, hire people who are different in their task areas. Differences in taking care of tasks can form a great team and have the ability to solve problems quicker and with authority.
Also, be an active listener. Show interest in their thoughts. You will get more from an employee by listening instead of constantly showing them how great and talented you are. In addition, looking neat and having a whiter smile also helps.
Keep in mind; even though work days are busy, there should always be time for laughter and fun. Even when demands are high and things need to bed done; a little laughter can make the work go faster and smoother. When your employees see that you are human and enjoy laughing now and then, they will see you in different light and that means a lot to most employees. Also, when you make a mistake, own up to it, but don’t focus on the mistake. Showing humility is good but it must be balanced with self-assurance.
